Grad Schooling

Lately I’ve been reading a lot about grad schools and weighing the costs and benefits of school versus work. All of my friends are either applying, attending, or have graduated grad school and I feel kind of behind. I found one that would be an absolute dream. The only downside is that they want 3 years of college French, whereas I only have one year. And I’ve already forgotten 75% of that one year.

My mom said that it’ll just be another useless degree like my econonics one and she’s right. She said, “If you want to throw away $40,000 then go ahead,” and I replied, “OK.” I think my mother has always wanted me to study something more practical like my brothers. To me, it makes sense to study something that I wouldn’t learn on my own or at work, like French studies, but most people return to grad school as a step towards getting a better job or a PhD. She always tells me to go back for my MBA, but when I remind her that people in business need social skills, she’ll then suggest becoming an accountant.

Honestly, a big part of why I want to attend that program is so I can live in Paris. I mentioned to my brother that it’s very difficult to do unless you can find a job or a husband and he said he would help me since he has a few European friends. I don’t need a ring or money or attention— I just need EU citizenship.

so, you start looking at my facebook for foreigners yet? benny poon? heh

  • Jenn says:

Why not try a visa and a job so you can live there for a while? Or a job in the US that has offices in Paris to which you can transfer?

  • Stephie says:

There’s no downsides to anything. If that truly is your dream, you should go for it.

Life’s too short to regret not doing something you really want. =)

    I hope you’re doing well.

  • Bonita says:

What? France! No you can’t leave me. You have to move to NYC. However, I do agree with Stephanie. Life is way to short. I don’t want to you look back on your life in 10 years and say, “Dang! I should have…”

p.s. I guess if you move to France then we can’t get marry ;oP

  • Kathy says:

    :)

  • Master says:

Min! you have to go to paris if not nyc!!! can you take more college french?? maybe night classes?

I am also looking for EU citizenship (uk, rather). Being an au pair might be your best bet, as far as France goes. Pay is good (often with living accomodations as well) & you can choose your family as it seems lots of people are looking for English teachers for their kids. As long as you can speak English (which you can) you’re good to go.

Or grad school — at least in Scotland (where I want to go) if you go to grad school there are programs that let you live in the country for a couple years because you are educated. Maybe look up stuff like that? Embassy websites & visa websites, etc. Good luck!

  • Newton says:

Research the EU’s “Blue Card” visa program, whereby foreigners can integrate into European society and GET PAID TO LIVE (and work) there.

Gotta love the graying Europeans and their thirst for highly skilled labor.

I’m not sure how amenable they are to Americans who are going abroad, but if you succeed and get paid in Euros, then you’ll receive roughly twice the pay you would in America. DOUBLE THE MONEY AND DOUBLE THE CULTURE.

Hi, I'm Mindy. People who meet me and then happen to stumble upon my blog are usually surprised that I have things to say because I'm quiet. Yes, I actually have thoughts. I have feelings and emotions too, believe it or not. more ↓

People who know me will say that I’m loud, too nice for my own good, and show signs of someone with a mild case of autism.

I grew up with two older brothers and no friends, which means my childhood was spent bouncing between PC, NES, and Playstation games. I consider myself a casual gamer– I never leave home without my DS. My favorite video game character will always be Quina Quen from Final Fantasy 9.

Once upon a time, I studied abroad in Paris and loved it so, so much. I think about Paris on a bi-hourly basis. I now live in San Francisco, but hope to move to New York someday.

The name of my website comes from a Teen Girl Squad episode.

I love pugs, Kinder Eggs, traveling, and shy people.

I don’t like spiders, horseradish, driving, and being shy. less ↑
